Television Game Show Nostalgia

Back before the American ‘Reality TV’ phenomenon, we were quite partial to game shows. Shiny, glittery stages with the promise of fabulous cash and prizes served as a powerful magnet attracting the TV viewing population. As I look back on some vintage clips of a variety of game show moments, I can’t help but to notice the sharp contrast to today’s popular game shows. It seems to me that the shows from twenty years ago were quite a bit less polished and controlled. There were often wild moments from both contestants and hosts. Perhaps today’s contestant screening is more regimented? Today, shows seem a bit more focused on sizzle than steak – drama and prizes, in lieu of truly original game mechanics. Of course I’m generalizing and just spouting off here, but… well… ok, enough of the commentary, on to memory lane…
